I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t get another emo Ayame song again, but this one really grew on me. It inspires a lot more warm feelings than the last couple Ayame songs. As for the following outro to the album, I think it could either be a bit shorter or end in a blaze instead of ending like a candle going out slowly.

I think who tries to change and is akwkward is “I” not “you”.
I suppose the narrator is constant, “I”.
“I” seems to like and look up to “you”.
Then I think the paragraph describe “I” trying to change to 「並ぶ」 as “you”, who is 「少し先を歩く」, but failing so far.
I would translate the paragraph to
: I wonder if I’ve changed a little
: If I’ve changed more than I did before
: but I’ll always be awkward, smiling and making up excuses

I’ve reinterpreted the first and second stanzas, and it’s a lot better, but I’m not yet sure about changing “you” to “I” in the fourth stanza. My reason for this is because the line 「いつも君は優しく笑った」 seems to match with 「いつまでも不器用で笑って誤魔化して」. You’re probably right, but I need to think about this a little bit more.

I think we can interpret the stanza either way.
There can be several interpretations.
At first, grammatically both are completely right.
Now the matter is how we interpret the meaning in this specific context.
We will have to choose the subjects because it’s difficult to translate the stanza keeping the subjects(“I” or “you”) unidentified in English,
My opinion is what I wrote in the previous comment.
I interpret this song as about “I” like and look up to “you”,
and interpret the stanza in that way.
I feel it rather consistent and natural.

I decided to follow your suggestion and change it after all. I agree that the song is about “I” like and look up to “you”. It makes sense that “I” here wants to change and improve. I was just thinking that after we learned that “you” always smiles, it would make sense that this stanza was also talking about “you”. But I suppose there’s nothing stopping both characters from smiling.
