永夜 「Imperishable Challengers」 | Eternal Night 「Imperishable Challengers」

Perhaps more speaker switches than any other song I’ve ever heard before.

I’m heavily considering skipping 地霊 「幻想郷縁起 封ジラレシ妖怪達之頁」, as it uses the most difficult (read: archaic) grammar yet. A translation would be almost entirely based off instinct learned from modern grammar, so I’m very hesitant in dealing with it.

Notes: ― at the beginning of a line indicates speech from a character.
In the 10th stanza, “tonight” is read as “this morning.” From my interpretation, the speaker is reminiscing about the one they love back on the moon. Now think: as night falls on earth, it becomes morning on the moon, doesn’t it? This is how I explain it, at least.

soshite nobori yuku hi no hikari ni, 「geemu oobaa」 o shitte wa.
manshin soi no karada o kakae, akeru sora no shita nemuri yuku.

And thus, in the rising sun’s light, upon learning of “game over” and taking a break.
Bearing a body covered in scars, she sleeps under the dawning sky.

douse mata, nani kuwanu kao de arawareru no deshou?

―Now that I notice, you disappeared somewhere, leaving me standing still in the morning mist.
Well, whatever, you’ll just appear again looking innocent won’t you?

da to iu noni, koitsu wa doushite nete sugoshiteiru n da?

―What’s the secret plan? It’s all about constantly learning about your foe and yourself to win.
So you say, but why are you just wasting the time sleeping?

sou shite mata, aki no sora ni
itsuwari no tsuki ga noboru.

Like that, again, in the autumn sky
the false moon rises.

saa isoge, yoru o tobe!
koyoi koso wa to, tsuki no terasu shita.

Go on with haste, fly through the night!
Tonight is the night, under the moonlight.

mushi o oe, tori o oe!
subete wa kono taigi no nasu ga mama.

Pursue the firefly, pursue the night sparrow!
Everything is as this dire situation makes.

karisome no eien wa, tsudzuku no ka?
sono kanata, mukatte―.

Will this short-lived eternity continue?
Set your path, beyond it―.

doko ka mune ga sawagu konna yoru wa, rekishi no kage ni mi o hisome.
hikaru take no hitotsu ni natta hou wa, tsugi no yoru o tada matteiru.

On this somewhat anxious night, she hides herself in the shadows of history.
She who had become one with the shining bamboo, simply awaits the next night.

―dareshimo himitsu no hitotsu ya futatsu kossori kakaeteiru mono deshou?
watashi no zuru yasumi no koto wa dare mo shiranai.

―Everyone has one or two secrets that they bear in private don’t they?
Nobody knows about how I went absent without official leave.

―aruji ni sakigakete nemuru koto nado, tsukaeru mono ni arumajiki koto.
keredo konya wa toko o narabete tomo ni nemurereba to…

―Sleeping before your master and such, how disgraceful for a servant.
But it’d be nice to be able to sleep together with our beds lined up tonight, or rather, this morning.

soushite mata, aki no sora ni
itsuwari no tsuki ga noboru.

Like that, again, in the autumn sky
the false moon rises.

saa isoge, yoru o tobe!
tsuki no usagi wa nani o mi ageteru.

Go on with haste, fly through the night!
What is the moon rabbit looking up at?

eien no, togabito ga.
sono himitsu o kakushite tatteiru.

The eternal sinner.
Stands with her secret hidden.

itsuwari no hakoniwa o, kowashite wa,
mou hitotsu no gooru e―

Upon destroying the fake garden,
you’ll find another ending―

ikudo mo yoru o tomete wa
yoake ni namida o nonda
subete no 「eiya no mukui」 o ukeyo to, ima, fumetsu no chousenshatachi.

After stopping the night countless times
they held back their tears seeing the dawn.
“Accept the entire ‘retribution for the eternal night,’” now, imperishable challengers.

saa tsui ni, tadori tsuku.
honmono no tsuki no hikari no naka.

Look, they finally reach the place.
Bathing in the light of the true full moon.

itsu ka mita, mukashibanashi.
nayotake no hime no owasureba.

A once witnessed folklore legend.
If it isn’t the bamboo princess.

saa genkyou o, uchi taose!
keshite tokarenu nazo o toki akase!

Go and take down the culprit!
Be sure to shed light on the unsolvable puzzle!

nagaki yo no sono saigo wa.
eiya no waza ga, hirugaeru.

At the end of the long night.
The technique of the eternal night flips.

karisome no eien ga, owaru toki.
hontou no, yoake wa. soko ni―

When the short-lived eternity comes to an end.
The true dawn, will be. Right there―
