墓標 | Tombstones

Requested by my friend Lori, lyrics were found transcripted on a website. I somewhat question the structure of that last stanza there, but what can you do?

Notes: 「早起きにして六文の得」 is based on a proverb, 「早起きは三文の徳」, that essentially translates to “early bird catches the worm,” literally translating into “Waking up early is a benefit for those with little cash.” In this version though, instead of 三文, it’s 六文, which is the fare to cross the river Sanzu.

「丑の刻参り」, or “the two o’clock curse” as I named it, refers to the curse where you drive a nail through a doll into a sacred tree of a shrine for seven nights in a row between 1-3am to kill the person it represents. Imagine a voodoo doll. In the song here though, it only takes one night.

そこに只、在るのは。

soko ni tada, aru no wa.
nido to sei o kizamu koto no nai mukuro―.

The things, that are simply there.
Are but corpses that will never chip at life again―.

首と躯とは離れ離れ。

kubi to karada to wa hanarebanare

Their heads and bodies can be defined as apart.

幸福に沈む、傍ら、磔に。

maboroshi ni shizumu, katawara, haritsuke ni.

Sinking into an illusion of joy, while also, into crucifixion.

そして、僕といえば、
二度と地を踏むことさえない屍―。

soshite, boku to ieba,
nido to chi o fumu koto sae nai kabane―.

And, if you speak of me,
you speak of a corpse never to even tread upon earth again―.

足を踏み入れた蓬莱の地に、
僕らの楽園を夢見たのに

ashi o fumi ireta hourai no chi ni,
bokura no rakuen o yume mita noni

On the grounds of Mount Hourai that we treaded,
although we dreamt of our paradise

ああ僕らは
何も知らなかったんだ
何もかもが嘘つきのこんな幻想郷があることも

nani mo kamo ga usotsuki no konna sekai ga aru koto mo

Ah, we didn’t

―semete, kimi ga i sae sureba…

sonna omoi ga, mune o kasumete wa, kieta.

those kinds of thoughts brushed by my heart, and disappeared.

こんな恐ろしいところには、
もはや、
一刻たりとてもいられない。

konna osoroshii tokoro ni wa,

hitotoki tari totemo irarenai.

In this kind of dreadful place,
no longer,
not even one more moment can I stay.

そうしてその足を。
自ら死地に追いやる愚か者―。

sou shite sono ashi wo.
mizukara shichi ni oi yaru oroka mono―.

With that, I was a fool.
Who personally drove his feet into a land of death―.

もっとも安全な方法とは。

mottomo anzen na ikikata to wa.

The safest way to live can be defined as.

常に自分の手に握り置くもので。

tsune ni jibun no te ni nigiri oku mono de.

Something to always grip firmly in one’s own hands.

けして理解のできぬ、
世界に触れてなどしてはならない。

keshite rikai no dekinu,
sekai ni furete nado shite wa naranai.

You must not come in contact with a world,
that doesn’t understand that in the least.

なんて悪趣味な人形戯曲。
誰も人間ではいられなかったか

nante akushumi na ningyou asobi.
dare mo matomo de wa irarenakatta ka

What an untasteful toy theater.
Could no one be honest, be human?

ああ彼らは
かくも愚かだったのだ
暗闇の向こう側で謎のピエロが嗤っている

aa karera wa
kakumo oroka datta no da
kurayami no mukougawa de nazo no piero ga waratteiru

Ah, as for them
they were all so foolish.
The mysterious clown is sniggering on the other side of the darkness.

ああボクこそ
最後の勝者なのだ
愚か者共の末路をその正義の証として

aa boku koso
saigo no shousha na no da
oroka mono domo no matsuro o sono seigi no akashi toshite

Ah, but as for me
I’ll surely be the final victor
as proof of the justice of the fateful end of those fools

そして誰もいなくなる前に

soshite dare mo inaku naru mae ni

And then, before everyone dies off

これは心の最奥に刻み込む、墓標。

kore wa kokoro no oku ni kizami komu, bohyou.

This will etch into the depths of my heart, the tombstones.

疑いもせず　手に取る報い
好奇心こそ最大の敵よ

utagai mo sezu te ni toru mukui
koukishin koso saidai no teki yo

Without a doubt, they get their just desserts
It’s curiousity that’s the greatest enemy
