Tombstones

Requested by my friend Lori, lyrics were found transcripted on a website. I somewhat question the structure of that last stanza there, but what can you do?

Notes: 「早起きにして六文の得」 is based on a proverb, 「早起きは三文の徳」, that essentially translates to “early bird catches the worm,” literally translating into “Waking up early is a benefit for those with little cash.” In this version though, instead of 三文, it’s 六文, which is the fare to cross the river Sanzu.

「丑の刻参り」, or “the two o’clock curse” as I named it, refers to the curse where you drive a nail through a doll into a sacred tree of a shrine for seven nights in a row between 1-3am to kill the person it represents. Imagine a voodoo doll. In the song here though, it only takes one night.

mou, soko ni wa dare mo iwashinai.
dakara,
mou, soko ni wa kimi mo iyashinai

Not anymore, is anyone there.
Therefore,
not anymore, are you there either.

soko ni tada, aru no wa.
nido to sei o kizamu koto no nai mukuro―.

The things, that are simply there.
Are but corpses that will never chip at life again―.

kubi to karada to wa hanarebanare

Their heads and bodies can be defined as apart.

maboroshi ni shizumu, katawara, haritsuke ni.

Sinking into an illusion of joy, while also, into crucifixion.

soshite, boku to ieba,
nido to chi o fumu koto sae nai kabane―.

And, if you speak of me,
you speak of a corpse never to even tread upon earth again―.

ashi o fumi ireta hourai no chi ni,
bokura no rakuen o yume mita noni

On the grounds of Mount Hourai that we treaded,
although we dreamt of our paradise

aa bokura wa
nani mo shiranakatta n da
nani mo kamo ga usotsuki no konna sekai ga aru koto mo

Ah, we didn’t
know a single thing
not that this kind of world, gensokyo, where every little thing is a liar, existed either

aa nani o
tagaete shimatta no ka
bokura wa kitto naka yoku ikite ikeru haze datta noni

Ah, what did we
end up going against?
Despite the fact that we surely should’ve been able to live on good terms

―semete, kimi ga i sae sureba…

―At least, as long as you were here…

sonna omoi ga, mune o kasumete wa,      kieta.

those kinds of thoughts brushed by my heart, and disappeared.

konna osoroshii tokoro ni wa,
mohaya,
hitotoki tari totemo irarenai.

In this kind of dreadful place,
no longer,
not even one more moment can I stay.

sou shite sono ashi wo.
mizukara shichi ni oi yaru oroka mono―.

With that, I was a  fool.
Who personally drove his feet into a land of death―.

mottomo anzen na ikikata to wa.

The safest way to live can be defined as.

Something to always grip firmly in one’s own hands.

keshite rikai no dekinu,
sekai ni furete nado shite wa naranai.

You must not come in contact with a world,
that doesn’t understand that in the least.

nante akushumi na ningyou asobi.
dare mo matomo de wa irarenakatta ka

What an untasteful toy theater.
Could no one be honest, be human?

aa karera wa
kakumo oroka datta no da
kurayami no mukougawa de nazo no piero ga waratteiru

Ah, as for them
they were all so foolish.
The mysterious clown is sniggering on the other side of the darkness.

aa boku koso
saigo no shousha na no da
oroka mono domo no matsuro o sono seigi no akashi toshite

Ah, but as for me
I’ll surely be the final victor
as proof of the justice of the fateful end of those fools

soshite dare mo inaku naru mae ni

And then, before everyone dies off

kore wa kokoro no oku ni kizami komu, bohyou.

This will etch into the depths of my heart, the tombstones.

utagai mo sezu te ni toru mukui
koukishin koso saidai no teki yo

Without a doubt, they get their just desserts
It’s curiousity that’s the greatest enemy

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

hitori yo aruki shinobi yoru kage wa
osanasa yue kidzukezu ni ita ka

Walking alone at night, the creeping shadow
is it because he was childish that he couldn’t tell?

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

agaku koto sae tamesenu hodo ni
satosa to wa orokasa to dougi ka

Smarts to the point where you can’t even try to struggle
can that be defined as the same as foolishness?

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

koi no nigasa to inochi no amasa
otona no aji wa yudan taiteki

The bitterness of love and the sweetness of life
as for the flavour of adults, not being alert is the greatest foe

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

hitoyo kagiri no ushi no koku mairi
keikai nado imi no nai sekai

Bound to one night, the two o’clock curse
it’s a world where precaution has no meaning

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

Was it more than a simple meal for the end?
The early bird catches a ticket to the afterlife

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

shoujiki mono ga baka o miru no da
okubyou ni susumu michi nashi

Honest people just look like fools
There’s no road to advance for cowards

sou, kizamarerubeki da hitori hitori

Yes, they should be engraved, one person by one

aa nani o tagaete shimatta no ka bokura wa kitto naka yoku ikite ikeru haze datta noni
aa semete kimi ga ite kureta nara saigo no shoujiki mono o shinjirareta kamo shirenai na
nado to baka me ga! yomayoiigoto ni shizume! shoujiki mono ga baka o miru sonna sekai no ruuuru nara aa! boku koso saigo no shousha na no da! sono shinjitsu o kami shimete ima rakuen o ato ni shite bohyou ni kizanda kazu dake mune ni komi ageru shouri no yoin ni warau.

Ah, what did we end up going against? Despite the fact that we surely should’ve been able to live on good terms. Ah, at least, if you were here for me, I might’ve been able to believe the last honest ones, says the idiots! Sink in your nonsense!  If honest people just look like fools, if that’s the way of that world. Ah! As for me, I’ll surely be the final victor! Chew on that truth and leave paradise behind now. With each time I carved into a tombstone, I snigger at the afterglow of victory filling my chest.
